Masters Confirmation Review and Progress Report

Graduate Research Confirmation Review

It is a degree condition for a Masters by Research and Master of Philosophy student to complete a Confirmation Review after the first six months (or twelve months for a part-time student) of candidature to assess and ensure the students’ work will progress into a high quality thesis. All research students are under ‘probationary candidature’ until the Confirmation is completed.

Requirements

  • Provide a written proposal of between 2,000–5,000 words (depending on departmental requirements).
  • Present a 15 minute oral presentation.
  • Meet with the Advisory Committee for information on the roles and composition of the Advisory Committee.
  • Address any conditions of enrolment.
  • Complete Confirmation Review paperwork.

Extension to Review Date

If a student is not able to submit their Confirmation Review due to either work difficulties or the Advisory Committee not being able to meet by the due date, the Principal Supervisor is to send an email to to request an ‘extension to probationary candidature’.

Note: Only a maximum of one six weeks extension from the initial due date is permitted. Further extensions are not allowed and may lead to unsatisfactory process.

Graduate Research Progress Review

A Master of Philosophy student is required to complete a Progress Review every six months in order to assess and ensure the student’s work, and to continue enrolment:

  • Full-time students are required to complete a Progress Review every six months after completion of the Confirmation Review.
  • Part-time students are required to complete a Progress Review after their first six months of candidature, then another review every twelve months following the Confirmation Review.

Requirements

  • Provide a written Progress Report to the Principal Supervisor at least five days prior to the review meeting.
  • Meet with the Advisory Committee for information on the roles and composition of the Advisory Committee.
  • Complete Progress Review paperwork.

Extension to Review Date

If a student is nearing the Work Submission Date and is not ready to submit their thesis, ‘Attachment A’ of the Progress Review is to be completed along with a request to extend candidature for up to six months.

Full-time Graduate Research students are allowed one six month-extension (one twelve month-extension for part-time students) throughout their degree.

Lapse in Good Standing

If a Masters by Research or Master of Philosophy student has been enrolled for two years (full time) and has exhausted their extension allowance, they are entitled to complete Attachment A of the Progress Review to Lapse in Good Standing. Lapsing in Good Standing removes the students’ enrolment for a maximum of one year and allows them to work on their thesis without immediate time constraint.

Conversion from MPhil to PhD

Students are required to successfully complete two coursework subjects before they are eligible to apply to convert from MR-PHILENG Master of Philosophy to 351AA PhD Engineering.
