Aileen Sinclair Memorial Scholarship

Ms Sinclair was a much-loved member of staff for eight years, working in the Faculty Office and later the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Ms Sinclair died tragically in December 2000. Her family have established this scholarship to continue the support she gave to the students during her time at the University.

The family of the late Ms Aileen Sinclair has endowed a scholarship to be awarded to a student enrolled in a professional engineering master within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident; and
  • be enrolled in one of professional 300-point engineering Master by coursework degrees in the  Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT); and
  • demonstrate (in order of priority):
    1. financial need; and
    2. have experienced one of the following areas of disadvantage: are from non English-speaking background; disability; student from a rural area; identify as a woman in a non-traditional area; and
    3. academic ability.

Value

In 2024, one award valued at approximately $4,700 is available.

Selection criteria

Applications will be assessed on the following criteria (in order of priority):

  1. Financial need: as determined by the information provided in your application, including submission of a personal statement addressing how the funds will impact you and the 2024 FEIT Student Financial Assessment form
  2. Disadvantage:
    • Non English-speaking background:
      You are eligible if  you were born outside Australia in a non-English speaking country and arrived in Australia during your secondary education; or
    • Disability:
      You're eligible for this category if you've experienced a disability or chronic medical condition (physical, sensory, intellectual, acquired brain injury or neurological impairment) prior to or since your tertiary study; or
    • Student from a rural area: 
      You are eligible if you resided in a rural area for 5 years (consecutive) or 10 years (cumulatively), from birth. A rural or isolated area is defined as an area with an Australian Standard Geographic Classification of: RA2, RA3, RA4 or RA5. If you are based in Victoria this essentially means anywhere outside of Melbourne or Geelong. You can check the classification of your address on the Department of Health and Ageing website; or
    • Identify as a woman in a non-traditional area (engineering); and

3. Academic ability: as determined by your current or most recent WAM

4. Personal Statement outlining your interest in engineering and current career aspirations

Conditions

Students may not hold the scholarship more than twice over the course of their degree.
