John Balfour Memorial Scholarship

The John Balfour Memorial Scholarship was founded by donations from Lewis John Balfour, Ella Nerrina Balfour, Phyllis Eyres Read and Beverley Eyres Balfour in memory of the late John Eyres Balfour. John Balfour was a sub-lieutenant of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who obtained his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Melbourne.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be enrolled in a 300-point engineering Master by coursework degree; and
  • have completed between 50 to 100 credit points.

Value

A total award of $3,000–$9,800 (according to length of course remaining), to be paid in annual instalments over the remainder of the recipient’s degree.

Selection criteria

Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Academic merit
  • Strength of your personal statement outlining:
    • your reasons for studying Engineering
    • your career aspirations
    • impact of the scholarship

Preference will be given to men or women who are serving or have served in the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy, or the Australian or British Merchant Navy, or are the sons or daughters of men or women who have thus served.
